The brand is named after its founder Herman Upmann who was a German banker who moved to Havana in 1844 and subsequently opened a bank and started making cigars. The bank closed in 1920 but his cigars are still going strong.  The wrappers of these cigars tend to be darker in colour than those used in most Cuban brands this helps to develop the full flavour of the cigar at a much earlier point. The box of 25 H Upmann Connossieur No.2 are 5 1/4″ by 51 ring gauge, premium, hand rolled, Cuban cigars.  The Connossieur No.2 is a unique vitola within the Habanos portfolio and in the factories of Cuba its shape is known as Bohemios (Bohemians in English).  It is the first Havana cigar to boast a ring gauge of 51. This elegant cigar has a wonderful intensity and flavour.

Rich earth and tobacco flavours form the core of the blend. Notes of sweet cedar, creamy smooth cappuccino, nuts, dried fruit, almond and black pepper develop as the cigar transitions. H Upmann Cigars – The Brand

Herman Upmann was a banker from Germany who so loved Cuban cigars that he moved to Havana in 1844 and set up as both banker and cigar maker. His bank closed in the early 1920s but his cigars live on as a fine example of an elegant, light to medium flavoured Havana.

The brand is particularly welcome here as Hunters & Frankau has represented H.Upmann in Britain since the 1850s and between 1925 and 1937 we owned the factory in Havana as well as the worldwide brand rights.

Upmann’s blend is composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Amongst the best known H. Upmann sizes are the Magnum 46 and Magnum 50, which was introduced in 2008. As the name suggests Magnums have heavy girths – the number represents the ring gauge of each size. Other important sizes include the Sir Winston, the Connoisseur No.1 and in smaller vitolas the Corona J and Half Corona, which was introduced in 2011.
