Kapp & Peterson – A brief history
In 1874, a year after receiving a prize medal for his efforts at the 1873 London International Exhibition, German émigré Frederick Kapp moved his pipe retail operation from London to Dublin, Ireland, where he opened a new tobacco and pipe shop, making and selling pipes crafted from meerschaum and briar root. Within a year, Frederick employed a young Latvian woodworker named Charles Peterson to help with production and repairs.
As a result of the partnership’s talent and ability to acquire resources, Peterson & Kapp rapidly became a household name. Just as certain brands are renowned for excellence in their respective spheres, in the world of pipe smoking that is the role of Peterson Pipes.
In 1890 he invented the System pipe and 8 years later he patented his Lip mouthpiece. The pipe, along with the mouthpiece was often called the ‘pipe of the century’ by advertisers.
Moving into the 20th century, the Peterson pipe was embraced by politicians, Business Leaders, Clergymen, generals, sportsmen, artists and writers. The Peterson name was literally and figuratively hanging from the lips of the most powerful people in the world.
Conan Doyle cemented the image of Peterson as ‘the thinking man’s pipe’ with the publication of his first mystery investigation novel. The sleuth Sherlock Holmes character was completed with his very own curved Peterson pipe.
The company and brand were purchased in 2018 by Laudisi Enterprises, the parent company of Cornell & Diehl tobacco.
Still based in Dublin and now the oldest continuously operating pipe factory in the world it remains true to its heritage, tradition, and reputation.
