Samuel Gawith St James Flake is a bright flake blended from Virginia and Perique leaf with no added topping. This blend derives its character and flavour solely from the quality tobacco used. The stoved Virginia’s add hints of chocolate and notes of sugary dark fruit, tangy citrus, bread, wood and earth. The Perique offers raisin, fig and plum notes as well as pepper and spice on the palate and are masterfully blended to create a perfect balance. The nicotine content and strength are both medium in this surprisingly smooth, slightly sweet and spicy smoke.

Samuel Gawith St James Flake is quite moist and will benefit from drying a little before being smoked. When you open the tin leave it open for 30 minutes or so before preparing the flake. You can prepare this flake tobacco in a number of ways:

Folding and stuffing. Fold the flake in half long ways against the grain of the flake. Fold the flake in half again this time with the grain to form a square. Gently squeeze the tobacco before stuffing into the pipe bowl.

Rubbing out. Rub the flake gently between the hands to break up the flake to desired thickness before loading the pipe.

Rolling. Roll the flake with the grain generally lengthwise, squeeze gently and load into the pipe bowl.

Whichever method you use is a question of personal preference but the tobacco is best packed lightly to prevent any draw problems as flake tobacco tends to expand more so than ready rubbed tobaccos. To fully appreciate the flavour and taste we recommend it is best smoked at a slow pace.
